Higher Degree Immersed Finite Element Methods for Second-order Elliptic Interface Problems

چکیده
We present higher degree immersed finite element (IFE) spaces that can be used to solve two dimensional second order elliptic interface problems without requiring the mesh to be aligned with the material interfaces. The interpolation errors in the proposed piecewise p degree spaces yield optimal O(hp+1) and O(h) convergence rates in the L2 and broken H1 norms, respectively, under mesh refinement. A partially penalized method is developed which also converges optimally with the proposed higher degree IFE spaces. While this penalty is not needed when either linear or bilinear IFE space is used, a numerical example is presented to show that it is necessary when a higher degree IFE space is used.

Immersed Finite Element Methods for Elliptic Interface Problems with Non-homogeneous Jump Conditions
Abstract. This paper is to develop immersed finite element (IFE) functions for solving second order elliptic boundary value problems with discontinuous coefficients and non-homogeneous jump conditions. These IFE functions can be formed on meshes independent of interface. Numerical examples demonstrate that these IFE functions have the usual approximation capability expected from polynomials emp...
متن کاملHigh Degree Immersed Finite Element Spaces by a Least Squares Method
We present a least squares framework for constructing p-th degree immersed finite element (IFE) spaces for typical second-order elliptic interface problems. This least squares formulation enforces interface jump conditions including extended ones already proposed in the literature, and it guarantees the existence of p-th IFE shape functions on interface elements. The uniqueness of the proposed ...

We propose new discontinuous finite element methods that can be applied to one-dimensional elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients. These methods are based on a class of higher degree immersed finite element spaces and can be used with a mesh independent of the location of coefficient discontinuity. Numerical experiments are presented to show that these methods can achieve optimal con...
متن کاملA Priori Error Estimates for Some Discontinuous Galerkin Immersed Finite Element Methods
In this paper, we derive a priori error estimates for a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods using immersed finite element (IFE) functions for a classic second-order elliptic interface problem. The error estimation shows that these methods can converge optimally in a mesh-dependent energy norm. The combination of IFEs and DG formulation in these methods allows local mes...

This article presents new immersed finite element (IFE) methods for solving the popular second order elliptic interface problems on structured Cartesian meshes even if the involved interfaces have nontrivial geometries. These IFE methods contain extra stabilization terms introduced only at interface edges for penalizing the discontinuity in IFE functions. With the enhanced stability due to the ...
